 Marcela Gontijo's I CHING series is inspired by one of the greatest legacies of the Chinese people, the I Ching. Written around 1150-249 BC, the I Ching considers that everything in nature is in constant change. "I" is associated with "mutation," "movement," and "Ching" refers to "classic book," meaning the I Ching can be understood as the "book of changes." It is basically how the Chinese understood and were able to explain everyday events. The work is based on the linear, mathematical, and spiritual organization of the I Ching, the hexagram. The combination of lines generated by the interplay of numbers and chance is reorganized by the artist to create a moving pattern of colors, understood here as mutation, that establishes the order of the universe.
